To live is to change. I’m currently experiencing more change than usual (I’ll get into this in future posts). I intend to use this newsletter as an anchor—a log of activity, ledger of goals, and place to communicate whatever I’m thinking about with the world.
Like investor updates, for anyone who’s interested
I’ve always been part of an institution, with clear systems of authority and reward. Having a direct supervisor—teacher, coach, professor, manager—to check in with and try to please is useful to me. Knowing there’s at least one person who cares makes it much easier to get started on my work.
On the other hand, I value being able to chase what’s interesting to me. I don’t enjoy defining my identity by a role in an organization. I don’t want to climb a ladder and reach the top. I want to keep learning, deep and broad. Everything I’ve done so far has been applicable in everything I’ve done after. I’d like to keep this up.
It’s hard to find one single person who can serve as an anchor when you don’t fit into a common career track. I’m hoping that publishing updates will provide accountability for me while yielding some interesting nuggets for you, my dear reader.
What you can expect
To start, I’ll publish goals of the week. I might also write some freeform posts when I’m chewing on a certain idea for a few days. Things I’m interested in right now:
The music industry
Artistry in general—how to bring beautiful things into the world
The tech industry
Working in engineering organizations
Communication, technical and soft stuff—how to do it, where it’s tricky
Systems of people—what makes a team work or fail, hierarchies, power
Design and product thinking
Whatever I think is fun right now
Who it’s for
If you’re reading this, it’s for you! Writing for friends, colleagues, family, passersby on the internet. Let me know who you are in the comments or by subscribing?
I assume I’m writing into the void, but at least I’ll have a way to track my progress and anchor my wiggly work, as well as a link to spit when someone asks what I’m up to.
(Felt cute, might delete later)
I might be taking myself too seriously with all this explanation, so…that’s enough!
